About the Annapolis Watercolor Club (AWC)

Who We Are

The mission of the AWC is to encourage the art of watercolor painting through the education of artists. We endeavor to support and encourage the larger art community. As creative people, we have found innovative ways to share the gift of imagination. Our members are also interested in art history, art appreciation, and travel. So, it is our intent to share these opportunities with others. We also know that giving to others is important, so we seek to gift to local charitable organizations.

  History of the AWC

The Annapolis Watercolor Club was founded in 1975 by a small group of dedicated artists under the leadership of Joanne Scott, united by a shared passion for watercolor as a distinctive and expressive art form. From its earliest days, the Club has been devoted exclusively to the practice, education, and promotion of watercolor, fostering both artistic excellence and community among its members. This commitment was formally recognized in 1997, when the AWC was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, strengthening its ability to serve artists and the broader community.

Beginning in 2020, during the many months of staying at home brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Annapolis Watercolor Club adapted with resilience and creativity. Monthly meetings and artist demonstrations continued uninterrupted through the use of Zoom, allowing members to stay connected, inspired, and engaged. This virtual format also opened new doors, enabling the Club to invite accomplished artists from across the nation—and even internationally—to share their techniques, perspectives, and artistic journeys.

Since its founding, the membership of the Annapolis Watercolor Club has grown from just a handful of artists into a vibrant organization of more than 200 active members. This growth reflects not only the enduring appeal of watercolor but also the welcoming and supportive spirit of the Club. We are thankful for those who join us, grateful for the generosity of our supporters, and continually inspired by the creativity, dedication, and camaraderie that define our community.
