Letter from the Vice President:

As summer winds down and we look ahead to autumn, I am excited about the energy and creativity flowing through our club. September always feels like a season of fresh beginnings—a time to return to our brushes with renewed focus and inspiration.

This month we are especially fortunate to welcome Emma Lian as our demonstrator. Emma, joining us live from Australia via Zoom, will share her unique watercolor style and creative process. Many of you may know her from her YouTube channel, where her tutorials have inspired artists around the world. We are thrilled to have her with us, and I encourage you to join the session—you won’t want to miss this opportunity to learn from her.

We also have our in-person workshop with Joan Cranor coming up. This two-day session will explore abstract watercolor, offering a chance to experiment with color, shape, and movement in a supportive setting. Workshops like this are an excellent way to push yourself creatively while connecting more deeply with fellow artists.

Looking back, it’s been wonderful to see so many of you participating in AWC activities—from plein air gatherings to recent exhibits. These moments remind us of what makes the Annapolis Watercolor Club so special: we are not just individuals painting alone, but a community that encourages one another, shares discoveries, and celebrates each member’s artistic journey.

As we move into the fall, I invite you to make time for your art. Whether that means finishing a piece you’ve been working on, experimenting with a new subject, or simply playing with color, remember that watercolor rewards both discipline and spontaneity. And don’t forget to share your work with us—through our salon, exhibits, and online spaces—because your art inspires others in ways you may not realize.

Warmly,
Eileen Hempel, Vice President
Annapolis Watercolor Club

Guest Painting Demonstrator ~ Emma Lian
7:15 pm on Zoom, Wednesday, September 10

Emma is a self-taught watercolor artist known for capturing the subtle beauty of nature in her intricate, vibrant botanical illustrations.

Her journey into watercolor began in 2021 in the remote town of Tom Price, Western Australia, with a set of paints gifted by her husband, sparking an unexpected passion for the medium. It was in watercolor that she found her true voice, a medium that let her highlight the unique textures and striking details of plants and flowers that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Emma’s signature technique—using minimal water to capture crisp details and intense colors—has become central to her style, which evokes the timeless elegance of traditional botanical illustration with a modern, accessible touch. Her art draws inspiration from her surroundings, whether it is the rugged landscapes of the Australian Outback, the lush beauty of Colorado’s mountain wildflowers, or the calming coastal scenery of her current home in California. Through her work, Emma invites viewers to slow down, find peace, and connect with nature in a new way.

In December 2024, Emma’s work was featured in British Vogue Magazine, with additional features in the January 2025 and February 2025 issues, marking an exciting milestone in her career.

Her art has garnered appreciation from an international audience of collectors and nature enthusiasts, each piece celebrating the resilience and elegance of the natural world, inviting a moment of reflection and calm in today’s fast-paced world.

Hancock’s Resolution Post Event
Review by Jan Morris (held June 19)

There were many spots to settle and paint countryside scenes through the gates of this old farm. While the lavender wasn’t at peak bloom, it was still worth studying along with floral/ herbal plot gardens and native plants. We had the place to ourselves and despite sweltering temperatures, we were able to get some brush strokes to paper before the thunderstorms. It would be nice to get down to the water.

I would recommend returning any time of the year. Feel free to share your comments with the pleinairchair@annapoliswatercolorclub.org

Kris Angelis

(Our New Exhibits Chair)

My background is varied. I taught art to kindergarten through grade 8 for many years before finishing my career at the Maryland State Department of Education.

As an art major in college I have taken many different art classes, but my love for watercolor painting was sparked by classes I started with Jane Hallowell. Since then I've taken classes at AACC and Maryland Hall.

Joining AWC has been a great way to meet fellow artists as well as enjoy the varied artists the club has as demonstrator

Just found out “The Wave and the Rock” got into the Baltimore Watercolor Society’s annual juried show. Very difficult show to be selected into. surprised and elated. Once again it is watercolor on Yupo paper. Love that paper!❤️
